Email disappeared in one click?

Since upgraded to the new Outlook – part of Office 365, version 1803, I found quite a lot difference. Previously was the column width issuePST issue, yesterday there is another one.

Trying to clean up and sort out dozens of emails on Monday after a busy weekend, I normally flag those important emails to prioritize. But wait a second, why those emails disappeared when I click on the flag? I know Outlook 365 is a bit slow and trying to re-sorting all the time, but the emails I clicked actually went to Deleted Items. What happened?

When I hover my mouse on the flag, it indeed tells me “Click to delete the item”. Seriously?!

Next, when I expand the column a bit. Ha! I saw the delete sign.

Why the heck do they bundle the flag sign and delete sign together? And, when the column is compacted, the default action is “delete”? I don’t see the logic here.

These kind of UI/UX issues in new Office are strange, huge difference. Not like the Ctrl-F thing, these are hard to explain. As a user, I will be cautious. I guess you should too.

Outlook column width not stay

Since started using the new Outlook on my new laptop, I found it’s a little bit annoying that the column width in the mail list pane did not stay. Every time after I set the comfortable width of each column so I can easily read and spot the email I am looking for, if I go to a different folder and come back, all the column width set back to default. This never happened in earlier versions, it might only apply to the latest versions 2016 and 365..

So how to fix that? There is a new “Automatic column sizing” option in Outlook. You can find that by right-clicking the heading in mail list pane and choose “View Settings”, then “Other Settings”. From there, you can uncheck “Automatic column sizing”, and do more customization in “Format Columns…”

I checked on my other PC using Outlook 2013, it has the same option but it keeps user setting intact instead of restoring to default every time.

Cannot move items to PST in Outlook

When you are trying to create a PST file or open an existing PST file in a different Outlook install, you get the following message.

“Cannot move the items. You don’t have appropriate permission to perform this operation.”

Please locate the PST file and check if you have full control permission under security tab.

And please locate the following registry key:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\pst
Dword: pstdisablegrow
Value: 1

Resolution
If the value is 1, pleaes change it to 0 and data could then be added to the PST file.

If you cannot find the key under the path above search HKCU for the word pstdisablegrow and change the value to 0

This will allow you to archive your information.

Control what happens when you start Outlook

1, In the folder that Outlook.exe is installed in, right-click the Microsoft Outlook icon, drag it to the desktop, and then click Create Shortcuts Here on the shortcut menu. Outlook.exe is usually located in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ Office folder.

2, Right-click on the desktop shortcut you just created, and then click Properties.

3, Click the Shortcut tab.

4, In the Target box, type a space after the path, and then type one or more of the following command-line options.

Paths that include spaces between words, such as C:\Program Files, must be enclosed in quotation marks (“) and are case sensitive. To specify a path in Outlook, precede the path with “Outlook:\\”.

For example, to open the My Documents folder when you start Outlook, the complete entry would be “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Outlook.exe” /select “C:\My Documents”.

Outlook Web Access segmentation in Exchange 2000 Server

OWA segmentation provides the ability to selectively enable features of OWA. For example, you can disable or enable mail, Calendaring, Contacts, public folders, Calendar reminders, new mail notification, and MS IE 5 support according to service offering. Administrators can segment OWA into different support offerings in Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2 (SP2) and later. You can segment OWA on a per-server or a per-user basis. Per-user settings override per-server settings, if both are in place.

A Few Important Troubleshooting Tips

1, When you are finished with your mail you must click the Log Off icon AND go to the FILE menu and choose either Quit or Close. If you don’t do both steps, you leave your e-mail account open to the next web browser user!

2, If OWA appears to freeze while you are using it, click on the Refresh or Reload icon on the top of the browser window. This should get things going again. If that doesn’t work, press Control N on your keyboard and a new page should appear. If you have tried the first two options and the computer is still frozen, click the browser window Close button.
